What a great success! With a huge turnout and plenty of great auction items to bid on. The party was a blast. Thank you to all that attended to support Kids for Tomorrow, I would also like to thank the volunteers who made this event come to life, and the sponsors for making the auction so amazing.
October 2007 Update
As we prepare for our next trip to Kenya, we at Kids for Tomorrow have been reflecting on our past few months of work with both Sewa Junior Academy and Hope Streams Academy. The first year of Kids for Tomorrow has been an incredible one, with our first major fundraiser behind us and a trip to oversee progress on the projects, we feel confident that Kid for Tomorrow is slowly but surely working towards our goal of quality education for these students.
On July 15, 2007, we arrived in Nairobi, Kenya to meet with the schools that we are supporting. We were lucky enough to meet with the founders of the schools, the teachers and the children. When we arrived the weather was cool, and the ground soggy and covered in garbage. The classrooms are built with corrugated sheet metal, leaving the students with little protection from the rain and cold. The children were all seated in the classrooms, eager to learn despite the insufficient number of desks, books, and other materials that they had to share. Against all the odds, we were consistently impressed by the level of commitment on the part of the schools leaders to improve their conditions of the school, to take in more students and add additional classes and grades, as necessary.
With help from an NGO operated on the ground in Nairobi, we were able to assess the most urgent needs of both schools. The list is long, but manageable and with help from you, possible. Both schools need more materials desks, books, pencils, paper, etc. The students families need assistance in paying for their school fees and uniforms. The teachers, many of whom work for free or very little money, need to have their salaries subsidized so that they may earn a living wage for themselves and their families.
We are asking for your donation of $50-$100, in order to raise enough money to purchase the necessary land and start the building process of school by December 24th, 2007. With your generous donation we can get closer to meeting our goal for this school. If this amount does not work for your budget, please remember that we gladly accept all donations small and large, and every little bit helps.
